Catholicism and Capitalism

Having made it through five years of my architectural education I am now well into my final year at university (hence the lack of posts).

My project this year is focused on the Piazza in front of Westminster Cathedral. Having started by exploring ideas about public realm I am now attempting to mass out my building proposal.

I became interested in the prospect of a building across the current Piazza (referencing the street pattern at the time of the Cathedral's construction). I view a building in this position as a focal point of the site's tension between catholicism and capitalism. How can such a building mediate between the Cathedral, its surrounding residential community and the commercial corridor of Victoria Street?
